Prenatal Attachment

Prenatal attachment is defined as the relationship between a pregnant woman and fetus. “Attachment relationships are formative because they facilitate the development of the brain’s self-regulatory mechanism”  (Fonagy & Target, 2002).

Regulation and coordination of emotion and internal organization is  interpreted through affect regulation and operates at a internal non-conscious level.

Synchronized attunement and rhythm, embodiment, awareness, intention, love, sensory awareness, are all necessary for healthy relationship development.  These mechanisms, “coordinate inner body signals to generate survival-appropriate inner regulation that allows the organism to act as a coherent whole.” (Churchland, 2002)

Attachment is the basis for the foundational beliefs about self and how to function in the world.

Philosophy

The fetus is subject to the environmental influences. The mother is physically and psychologically the “mediator” between the baby and the world. (Bertin, 1994 p3)

The fetus is sensitive, sensorial, and has an affective conscience capable of prelogical and preoperational learning and consciousness based on instinct and intuition, based on instinct.

A new born baby brings with him nine months of experience and exhibits individuality in body, temperament, and personality that distinguishes him from any other human being.

Parents strengthen their own relationships during prenatal bonding. Delivery, breastfeeding and attachment are easier and reduces postpartum depression.

Welcoming a new baby is an experience that is supported from pre-conception planning through infancy and beyond.

It is never too early to begin paving the way for healthy attachment, attunement and reciprocity.

It is also never too late to develop healthy parenting skills and develop a healthy bonding relationship.
